You screamed, ShindigsOhio screamed, we all screamed for ice cream! Our readers voted for ShindigsOhio to go to the 39th Utica Sertoma Ice Cream Festival for our first Shindig and we agreed! Joe and I hadn’t been to the ice cream festival at Ye Olde Mill since we were kids, and were excited to see how the festival has grown.
My favorite part as a little kid was watching the historic 1817 grist mill water wheel:
Little did we know that the festival had grown so large that it spanned across the street and the line of traffic to park was two miles long! Even though we waited almost 45 minutes to park in anticipation of Velvet Ice Cream, the festival was definitely worth the wait.
Joe’s excitement grew as he realized we were going to the festival on classic car cruise-in day. After meeting up with my mom and her boyfriend, we were off to look at cars! Tons of classic cars! Here is a picture of a few of them:
After looking around at all the cars, we realize that the line to buy ice cream in Ye Olde Mill was probably just about as long as the line to park! Ohio sure does love it’s Velvet Ice Cream. Luckily I found a small stand selling pints, so Joe and I could have our ice cream fix!
We then found our friend Lew singing on their patio and sat down to enjoy a few of his songs. Lew is also a member of the Kokosing River Surf Club Band, who will be the main entertainment at Joe and I’s wedding this fall. Lew sings every year at the festival, and once a month during the summer on their patio.
If you go today Lew will be singing on the patio this afternoon.
After listening to Lew, we checked out Ohio’s only Ice Cream museum. Velvet Ice Cream has been around since 1914. Their museum is complete with machines, a display historical of ice cream scoops, and my favorite: a viewing gallery of the Velvet Ice Cream factory. They have all their machines labeled. I would love to go back and see them all working in action. Velvet produces over 6 million gallons of ice cream each year! Here is a few of my pictures:
Joe and I had a blast at the ice cream festival yesterday. Thanks for voting for it!
We hope that many of you will head out there today for their last day with a ice cream eating contest for the kids, and the Goldwing motorcycle cruise in for the kids in all of us!
